Genetic hybrids are produced when animals of different species breed with each other. There is not much awareness about strange hybrid animals because they are infertile in nature and thus these sterile animals are unable to raise their generation. Check out the list of sixteen such breeds of strange hybrid animals that’ll make you rub your eyes in disbelief.
1) Tigon
The mating of a male tiger and female lion results in the birth of tigon. Tigons possess characteristics of both the parents. Some of them inherit spots from the mother and stripes from the father.
2) Grolar bear
Grolar bear aka pizzly bear is a hybrid animal found in the wild and in captivity. Breeding between brown and polar bears result in the birth of grolar bear. While they inherit the characteristics of both the animals, they are similar to polar bears behaviorally.
3) Beefalo
A beefalo or cattalo is the result of the crossing between buffalo and cow. An accidental cross was noticed long back in 1749. Nowadays, breeding between buffaloes and cows are carried out for mass beef production.
4) Liger
Ligers are the offspring of male lions and female tigers. Ligers are generally bred in captivity because the habitats of lions and tigers do not overlap in the wild.
5) Jaglion
Jaglions are extremely rare species formed by breeding between jaguars and lions. In 2006, two Jaglions were born at Bear Creek Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary in Barrie, Ontario.
6) Narluga
Narlugas are produced by the cross between narwhals and belugas belonging to the Monodontidae family of whales.
7) Hinny
Hinnies are the result of the cross between male donkeys and female horses which make them reverse mules. Hinnies are smaller and far less common than mules.
8) Coywolf
Coywolf or woyote is a hybrid animal formed by breeding between coyotes and gray wolves. They are larger than coyotes but smaller than wolves.
9) Zebroid
Zebroids are the result of the cross between a zebra and any other equine. This rare species of animals have been present from a long time in the wild. Charles Darwin also noted several Zebra hybrids in his work.
10) Wholphin
A wholphin is the offspring of a female common bottlenose dolphin and a male false killer whale. Wholphins possess characteristics of both the parents. Bottlenose dolphins have 88 teeth and false killer whales have about 44 due to which wholphins have total 66 teeth.
11) Dzo/Dzomo
Breeding between cows and wild yaks give birth to either dzo(male offspring) or dzomo(female offspring). These strange hybrid animals are found in Tibet and Mongolia. They are stronger as well as larger than cows and yaks.
12) Savannah cat
Savannah cats are the offspring of serval and a domestic cat. A large savannah cat may weigh up to 25 pounds and behave more like dogs.
13) Cama
A Cama is the result of the cross between a male dromedary camel and a female llama. Cama was produced for the first time on January 14 1998, through artificial insemination for the purpose of higher wool production.
14) Geep
A Geep is the offspring of a sheep and a goat. This hybrid animal is rarely found in nature because they die in embryo form itself. ‘Sheep-goat chimera’ was produced artificially by combining embryos of the two animals.
15) Mulard
Mulards are the result of the cross between Pekin and muscovy ducks. Muscovies generally interbreed with other domestic duck breeds and thus interbreeding occurs naturally. They are also produced commercially on farms for meat and foie gras.
16) Blacktip shark
Blacktip shark hybrid is the offspring of an Australian blacktip shark and common blacktip shark. This rare species was discovered recently by scientists on the eastern coast of Australia.
