“Religion is the belief in someone else’s experience. Spirituality is having your own experience.”
While religion dominates much of the world, it seems that the phrase “I’m not religious, I’m spiritual,” is becoming more and more popular.
However, what are the fundamental differences between the two?
1. Religion follows dogma, but spirituality follows the heart.
While religion is based on rules, spirituality is based on a feeling that resonates from within our soul.
2. Religion is organized, spirituality is not.
Spirituality doesn’t require churches or doctrines.
3. Religions consider themselves separate from one another, spiritual people don’t.
Religious rules and organizations make it to where it is nearly impossible for two religious people from separate denominations to get along. However, spirituality is a bit more flexible than that.
4. Religious people worship out of fear, spiritual people have a different view on things.
Being spiritual isn’t something that people do because they fear Hell. Instead, spiritual people are spiritual because of the enrichment it brings to their lives.
5. Religion requests that you submit, spirituality is the opposite.
Spirituality, or true spirituality, allows the person to become free from submission.
6. Religion calls itself the truth, spirituality knows it doesn’t know the truth, but that’s ok.
7. Religion provides punishment for sins, while spirituality is governed by karma.
Instead of a massive sky-father telling us we will pay for sin with death, spiritual people believe in karma.
8. Religion is created for you, while spirituality is a personalized and unique journey.
