Over the past few days, we have come across instances which expose glaring loopholes with regard to accessibility of medical facilities during lockdown. There were instances of people being denied ambulances. A pregnant woman was forced to walk 7 km in search of a clinic.
After a painful walk in search of a hospital, with her husband, the 20-year-old woman ended up giving birth in the hallway of a Dental Clinic. The woman developed labour pains on April 14. After a long walk in search of a Clinic, the couple spotted a person opening the shutters of a Dental Clinic.

Soon after they entered the clinic, the woman went into labour and was helped by the assistant, After delivery, the assistant notified Doctor who runs the dental clinic.
“Since she was exhausted after walking for hours, she delivered a premature baby within 5-10 minutes of reaching my clinic,” Doctor said. After delivering the child, the woman lost consciousness. The woman’s husband thought that the child had died and wrapped it in a paper for around 20 minutes.
“As I’m not a gynaecologist, I was unsure of what was to be done. I called my husband, who is a general physician, and he came immediately,” said Doctor.
The two doctors noticed that the baby was alive and started the treatment and were able to recover the health of the baby and the mother, following which, they were shifted to the General.
It is heartbreaking to think how painful it might have been for her to walk such a long distance in that condition. Steps need to be taken to make sure that people who are in dire need of medical attention are not left to fend for themselves in these trying times. It is also worth appreciating that the assistant in the dental clinic, as well as the doctors did everything they could and took care of the situation, even though it wasn’t usual for them.
