A disabled teenage girl was left fighting for her life after being partially eaten alive by a swarm of rats in the night.
The paraplegic 14-year-old, who was trapped in her medical bed when the attack occurred last Friday night, suffered 225 wounds all over her body, including her face.
Some of the girl’s fingertips were also bitten off.
French police in the city of Roubaix, close to the Belgian border, were called by hospital staff who alerted them that the disabled girl, named only as Samantha, had been admitted.
An examination by a forensic pathologist determined that the injuries were caused by rats which swarmed her as she lay on her bed, according to a local newspaper.
Speaking to Courrier-Picard newspaper, Samantha’s dad, Jerome, said when he first found her ‘covered in blood’ he thought she had been the victim of a ‘burglary gone wrong’.
He said: ‘There was blood coming from her ears. I was terrified that she might have had a brain haemorrhage.
‘There was blood everywhere. I thought it was a burglary gone wrong.’
The girl’s father has since filed a complaint against the landlord of the house and against the city.
He said that he had repeatedly asked them to remove a pile of rubbish bins left in a nearby car park.
Jerome added that doctors have said they will not be able to repair his daughter’s fingertips.
A preliminary investigation has been opened to examine ‘housing conditions contrary to human dignity’, the prosecutor’s office said.
The town hall of Roubaix and the landlord were not immediately available for comment.
