The world is struggling to fight off the global crisis that is COVID-19. This has brought in the need for people to innovate and come up with techniques and devices to prevent further damage by the deadly virus. A class Xl student from Bengal’s Bardhaman district (India) has come up with a game-changing mask.
The girl named Digantika Bose has invented an ‘Air Providing and Virus Destroying Mask’. It took her seven days to develop the mask and after it was put through a series of tests, the Ministry of Science and Technology took Bose’s permission to take her invention forward in the fight against the pandemic.
The 17-year-old participated in the Challenge COVID-19 Competition which was organised by the National Innovation Foundation and submitted her design. Once her work was shortlisted, Bose agreed to let them take the invention and help the masses.
Always interested in science and technology, this was Bose’s moment to shine and help others by doing what she does best. She decided to spend her time in developing a solution to the worldwide problem when schools shut down due to the lockdown. She is also the proud holder of a patent.
The mask has two parts. The first part has two one-way valves and the second part has two reservoir-containers. While inhaling, dust and other harmful factors will get trapped in water particles and the lipid proteins of the virus will get destroyed. A one-way valve makes it possible for clean air to enter the person’s lungs. While exhaling, the air goes out through another one-way valve and enters a reservoir-container in which the lipid protein of the virus is broken down in order to destroy it.
Bose stated that if a COVID-19 patient uses the mask, the droplets that they will exhale will not contain the virus.
She said, “The day the lockdown was announced. I found out that there will be no test. This has been on my mind ever since. I have also done special studies for this. It took seven or eight days. I saw that everyone is walking around wearing ordinary masks. However, it does not prevent the virus; so, I thought to develop something effective.
I have received multiple state awards. But this feeling is completely different. I am overwhelmed.”
She added, “This mask will work in the coronavirus pandemic in the country. I feel very good. This recognition from the Union Ministry of Technology has given me more encouragement and boost. I am very happy for being able to do something for my country.”
