She wanted to study so Her Husband Chops Off Her Finger!
Rafiqul Islam tied up his 21-year-old wife, taped up her mouth and then cut off the five fingers of her right hand just hours after he had returned from the United Arab Emirates, police chief Mohammad Salauddin said. He did this because she started studying for a college degree without his permission!
Being a woman is no less than a curse. Shocked? Don’t be! As women, we have to acquire, achieve and emulate a ‘tall list’ to be deemed presentable and acceptable to society. Fair, slim, good feature, decent education, great cooking skills, polite, soft-spoken, nurturing, kind, compassionate and much more such adjectives are pitted against women to ensure they fit the social and cultural norms. And God forbid if the girl lacks any one of these qualities… it would be blasphemy!
I have myself have faced discrimination on these parameters thanks to my dusky skin tone and short height as compared to my ‘fair and lovely’ MBA husband. Crimes against women are not news – they are now as common as routine. Girls are burnt for dowry or abandoned, raped, female feticide and infanticide are as normal as breathing air. We all cry foul when we hear of these atrocities but not much is changing!
With rape cases decorating the newspapers, you think one can’t hit another low with the plight of women.
Just when you think you have read, heard and seen it all, you hear about a husband who chops off his young wife’s finger because she is much more educated than he is! Wow… is this even a reason?

A jealous husband is facing life in prison after chopping off his wife’s fingers because she began studying for a degree without his permission.
Rafiqul Islam, 30, blindfolded his wife Hawa Akhter, 21, and taped her mouth, telling her he was going to give her a surprise present.
Instead, he made her hold out her hand and cut off all five fingers. One of his relatives then threw Ms. Akhter’s fingers in the dustbin to ensure doctors could not reattach them.
Hawa Akhter has said she will continue her studies, despite the horrific attack
Mr. Islam, who is a migrant worker in the United Arab Emirates, had warned his wife there would ‘severe consequences’ if she did not give up her studies.
‘After he came back to Bangladesh, he wanted to have a discussion with me,’ Ms. Akhter told The Times.
‘Suddenly, he blindfolded me and tied my hand. He also taped my mouth saying that he would give me some surprise gifts. But, instead, he cut off my fingers.’
Mohammed Saluddin, the Bangladesh police chief said that Mr. Islam had confessed after he was arrested in the capital, Dhaka, and will face charges of permanent disfiguration.
Human rights groups are demanding life imprisonment.
‘He was enraged. He was jealous because while he only had a grade eight standard education, she was off to college to pursue higher studies,’ said Mr. Saluddin.
Ms. Akhter says she is learning to write with her left hand and is determined to resume her studies. She is now back at her parent’s house.
Why would he do such a thing? Apparently, it is jealousy. Being an 8th-grade student himself, he was jealous of his wife’s academic aspirations. Isn’t a home and a family run together? If she were in his place and he was the more educated one, it would be a matter of pride for her right? Why can’t he and men like him be proud of their better half’s progress? If he was ashamed of his lesser academic qualifications, he should not have agreed to the match in the first place. I am not sure how the girl agreed as well.
You might argue that the couple doesn’t belong to the urban middle class but this is a crime that takes place across social strata. I know a couple who are well-educated and work with MNCs. But when the wife scored her mid-year bonus, her mother in law was enraged. In fact, the girl was asked to step down so as to not make her husband feel inferior. Why can’t he take pride in her achievements and then build a better life for each other as a couple? I am seething with anger as I write this. He is jailed but I don’t think this is enough.
One cannot lament enough on such an incident nor can the law or the society guarantee that it won’t happen again. It just sickens me that even in the year 2017 we are being subjected to such news. When will we learn? This young woman lost her fingers for the sake of her education and no other fault. There are so many out there who are not allowed to live because they aspire for a better life. Is this planet Earth not big enough for men and women to live together in harmony?
