Controversies have long surrounded those who beg for money. Should we give them money or is that simply ‘enabling’ their behavior to continue begging? But these controversies were only further sparked when the Cheyenne Police Department posted a picture on their social media of the money they collected from a local beggar.
It has been alleged that the young man was begging for money to support his ailing mom.
He is said to have driven more than 30 miles from his home to beg for money after being run out of his own town.
There is no information on why he was run out of his own town but authorities posted a picture of the 234.94 dollars that they collected off the ‘transient.’
The post read: ‘yesterday, July 22, we arrested a transient for public intoxication. This is a person we frequently deal with, but we want to illustrate that there are better ways to help the transient population than to give them money for panhandling.’
It continued on by saying: ‘this person collected $234.94 in just a few hours of asking for money. Rather than feeding someone’s alcohol addiction, you can donate directly to local charities such as the Comea Shelter where your money will assist the homeless in a much more effective way.’
Since then, the post has been shared over 20,000 times and it has amassed nearly 4,000 comments from supporters and objectors.
Some were angered by the post saying: ‘I’m sure you guys are going to take every dollar he had, and not give it back to him. The way I see it, the people gave it to him. That’s his money.’
There were just as many people who supported the police as those who were angered by the post. A man wrote: ‘am I missing something? How are the Police bad guys all the sudden?? All they did was arrest a guy for public intoxication which is against the law!!’
Despite the tidal wave of comments, the Cheyenne Police Department was glad to see that the population was involved and inspired.
In their post, they wrote: ‘it is great to see that this topic is important to our community…we will never give up on our mission to help those in need. Get involved to help!’
