Russia has started preparing its citizens for a ‘nuclear war’ with the US as tensions mount over Syria.
Officials announced on Friday underground shelters had been built which could provide shelter for Moscow’s 12 million people in the event of an attack.
A headline in Zvezda, a defence ministry TV channel last week read: “schizophrenics from America are sharpening nuclear weapons for Moscow.”
Tensions remain high between Russia and America over the devastating civil war in Syria.
Russia warned at the weekend that the US would face “terrible, tectonic” consequences if it took military action against the Syrian regime, The Times reported.
Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world with 8,400 warheads compared to 7,500 in America.
Following weeks of deteriorating diplomatic efforts between the U.S. and Russia over Syria — to the point where the U.S. has now placed additional military options on the table — Russian President Vladimir Putin suspended a nuclear pact with Washington on Monday, Reuters reports, indicating his willingness to play the nuclear card with the United States.
Reports the news agency:
“Starting in the last years of the Cold War, Russia and the United States signed a series of accords to reduce the size of their nuclear arsenals, agreements that have so far survived intact despite a souring of U.S.-Russian relations under Putin.
“But on Monday, Putin issued a decree suspending an agreement, concluded in 2000, which bound the two sides to dispose of surplus plutonium originally intended for use in nuclear weapons.”
Putin’s decree, released by the Kremlin on Monday, cites “unfriendly acts” by Washington as motivating factors for the move. Under the accord, the U.S. and Russia were each to dispose of 34 metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium — enough for about 17,000 nuclear warheads.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, commenting on President Putin’s move on Monday, stated: “The Obama administration has done everything in its power to destroy the atmosphere of trust which could have encouraged cooperation.”
The recent story from Pravda tells us that Moscow, Russia is now prepared for a possible nuclear attack upon their country with enough underground bomb shelters for the entire population of the Russian capital. Telling us that 100% of the city’s population will be able to be protected as a result of new approaches to civil defense, we’re also told their bunkers are completely maintained, stocked and ready to go should they be needed due to a ‘man-made emergency or nuclear attack’.
While this recent story from the Associated Press tells us that Russia has just accused the US of nurturing ‘an aggressive nuclear strategy’ in a strongly-worded statement, this new story from the Gazeta drops a bombshell on us all, informing us that between October 4th and October 7th, a massive drill involving 40 million Russian people and about 200,000 professional rescue units will participate in a massive evacuation drill that will be going on all across the country. You can see their story translated at this Google Translator link. Every major Russian city will be involved in these drills.
While ‘evacuating’ 40 million people may only be a ‘drill’, we have to take a look at the massive amount of logistics involved to accomplish such maneuvers before we ask if this is really just a ‘drill’ afterall or something much, much more?
