Just off the coast of Egypt, divers have made a remarkable discovery. Something that was thought once to be a myth, or at the very least to be lost a long, long time ago.
It was said that the ancient legendary city of Heracleion was lost under the sea forever.
Well more than 1200 years later, off the bay of Aboukir, this ancient city has finally been discovered!
Its legendary beginnings go back to as early as the 12th century BC and were written of by Greek historians and was at its best during the time of the ancient pharaohs, at least that’s what historians believe.
During this excavation, some astounding artifacts were found. Statues of gods and goddesses that measure well over 15 feet tall and carved out of red granite, along with treasures of gold, rare stones, enormous tablets and well designed temples were all recovered from the site.
This find is of major historical importance, not just for the incredible artifacts discovered, but because it actually brings into question our entire understanding of what is often deemed to be nothing more than myth, just because it dates back to ancient antiquity.

Diver Franck Goddio examining the enormous hand carved statue of a pharaoh. This statue stands roughly 16 feet tall and was found near a large temple under the sea.
Here is the head of a statue carved out of red granite depicting the flood god Hapi. Hapi is an intersex god and symbolizes abundance and fertility. This is the largest statue of the god ever discovered in history.
Here we see the divers having a carefully lifting the enormous sculpture out the water. The monuments will be preserved safely in a museum for future reference.
Here we can see the enormous statues size better. This is the pharaoh, the queen and the god Hapi laid next to a temple stele. The stele dates back to the 2nd century B.C.. and was found broken into 17 pieces but were recovered and placed back together.

The divers carefully lift the enormous stele out of the water where it has been resting in secret for well over 1200 years.
The divers carefully inspect a box like container of gold fragments that date back to the 6th century B.C. Amazingly, these are still well intact.
This is a gold saucer that appears to have been used for drinking and serving.
A remarkable statue found under the bay of a Ptolemiac queen and is believed to have most likely been Cleopatra II or Cleopatra III dressed as the goddess Isis.
This massive red granite statue was also found near the temple of Heracleion and weighs a whopping 4 tons.

This is the head of a pharaoh statue being raised to the surface that shows how incredibly large it was. The statue measures over 5 meters in length (or over 16 feet) and was carved out of red granite.
Here is a small bronze figure of the pharaoh of the 26th dynasty found at a smaller temple in the great underwater city of Heracleion.
