While a spider bite may seem like the end of the world, they can often be treated at home, without the need for a trip to the emergency room. Your likelihood of getting bit by a poisonous spider depends on where you live. To avoid spiders, be cautious in sheds, garages, wood piles, basements, attics and other places that tend to be untouched or out of sight.

If you notice spider bite symptoms, there are several at-home spider bite treatments you can use to relieve pain and promote healing.

Spider Bite Treatment

1. Ice

Cleaning the bite area is the first step in spider bite treatment. Use warm water and natural soap to cleanse the area, then apply ice to the area for about 10 minutes to help reduce swelling. Use ice several times a day to help prevent inflammation.

2. Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal can help draw out internal toxins, including spider venom. Apply a charcoal paste to the bite and let it sit for 1-2 hours. Use this method twice a day for spider bite treatment.

3. Baking Soda Paste

Baking soda is an inexpensive and effective spider bite treatment method. Make a paste using baking soda and water, then apply it on the bite area several times a day. The paste will help relieve symptoms by reducing inflammation.

4. Elevation

If the spider bite is on your arm or leg, elevating the area can help decrease swelling. Use a pillow or two to help prop up the affected area while you sit. Elevation is a simple yet effective way to relieve pain.

5. Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender oil can be used as a spider bite treatment to help calm redness and inflammation. Combine a few drops of lavender essential oil with coconut oil and massage the mixture onto the spider bite to encourage healing.

6. Potato Poultice

If you have a potato handy, you can use it to help reduce inflammation caused by a spider bite. Grate a peeled potato and place the shreds into a thin piece of cloth. Use a rubber band to secure the contents and apply the poultice to the spider bite until the potato dries out. Repeat as needed.

7. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera contains many healing components, including vitamins, minerals, enzymes and fatty acids. Use the gel inside of a fresh Aloe Vera leaf or look for Aloe Vera gel at the store. Be sure to purchase one that doesn’t include preservatives or added ingredients. Apply the gel directly to the bite several times a day to relieve pain and promote healing.

8. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a natural astringent with antioxidant properties. Apply liquid witch hazel to the spider bite several times a day to provide relief from itching, redness and inflammation. You can find witch hazel at your local pharmacy or grocery store.

9. Don’t Scratch

Be careful not to scratch your spider bite! Scratching will further irritate the area, causing redness, pain and inflammation. Resist the urge to scratch so your bite will heal.
