  • Sampat Pal Devi founded The Gulabi Gang in 2006 to fight against the violence against women.
  • A mother of five, Pal, made a mission to stop the domestic abuse and made the ‘Gang’ with other women of her village.
  • Dressed in a Gulabi (Pink) colored Sari, the women storm the individual house where they find an incident of domestic abuse.
  • They also visit the rude husbands to beat them up with bamboo sticks till they discontinue their habit of abusing their wives.
  • The group has also played a major role in stopping child marriages, dowry, and female illiteracy rate by a lot.
  • In year 2008, the group stormed an electricity center in Banda district to pressurize officials to turn on the power which was disrupted to extort bribes.
  • The Gang is portrayed positively in the Indian media
  • The group has around 20,000 members (figures of 2009)
  • The Gang also has a chapter in Paris, France!
