Not everyone excels at mathematics, but we’d all like to think we could answer a seven-year-old’s homework, right?

Well, one mother was left so stumped after she tried to help her daughter with her maths homework that she sought help in a private Facebook group.

But it was to no avail, with members of the Breastfeeding Mama Talk Privately group also struggling to make sense of the conundrum.

The problem asked:

There are 49 dogs signed up to compete in the dog show. There are 36 more small dogs than large dogs signed up to compete. How many small dogs are signed up to compete?

Can you work it out?

The answer (spoiler alert)
Most people in the group allegedly ended up with 13 as the answer, but Angie later explained teachers told her it was 42.5.

Angie explained the method:

The district worded it wrong.

The answer would be 42.5, though, if done at an age-appropriate grade.

Apparently the way to get to 42.5 is as follows – 49-36=13. 13/2=6.5. 36+6.5=42.5.

But to get to that answer you’d have to put your Einstein head on. Oh, and ignore the fact you’d be left with half a dog.
