Thanks to medical advancements, a mother’s chances of passing away during childbirth have lowered significantly, but unfortunately, it still happens. Childbirth can be fairly complicated and even when a child is delivered successfully there can be issues that unfortunately harm a new mother. In this case, twenty-six-year-old Rocio Cortes Nunez was tragically killed just after giving birth in a hospital accident. No images of Nunez had been released until recently.

Nunez received a C-section operation to deliver her third child in Virgen de Valme Hospital, southern Spain when the accident happened. Hospital staff had Nunez transferred to the maternity unit on the third floor after waking up from surgery at 2:30 PM on Sunday. She was placed on a lift and her head was trapped between the frame and the roof as it started moving upward. Essentially, Nunez was ‘cut in half’ and died from the injury.

According to reports, a hospital porter had gone to change lifts after the doors had closed twice and nothing had happened, leaving Nunez inside of the original lift. As it began to move, the porter failed to pull the stretcher out in time, leaving Nunez stranded. “We still can’t believe what’s happened,” David Gaspar, Nunez’s brother-in-law said. “Something had to happen. This cannot go unpunished.”

Regional health minister Marina Alvarez said the accident was ‘quick, unusual, and tragic’. Nunez’s husband, Joe Gaspar, told ABC that it “cannot end like this. This time it has been Rocio but tomorrow it could be another person. I’m a total wreck.”

Nunez’s mother, Carmen, said that she came to see her daughter after she’d given birth but hospital staff wouldn’t tell her anything. “She had given birth at 11 in the morning so I went to the information desk. They told me there that a young girl had died and then confirmed it was my daughter. What a cruel death she suffered.”

The lift had reportedly passed all checks as of August 12 but a full investigation has now been launched. Mechanical failure is likely to be the culprit behind the gruesome accident. Firefighters were immediately called to help rescue her body. The autopsy for Nunez is expected to take place on Monday.

Despite the fact that Nunez’s new born child was with her during the accident, the baby managed to survive the ordeal. Nunez leaves behind her mother, husband and two other children between the ages of three and four. We offer our condolences to the family during this difficult time.
